Fire Prevention

Fire Prevention Bureau – The Fire Prevention Bureau is responsible for life safety, code enforcement, plan review, and public education relating to risk mitigation.Smoke alarms – We receive smoke alarms through a grant from the American Red Cross. They are available to any resident living within our service area. If you are in need of new or replacement smoke alarms, contact fireprevention@springfieldfire.com. We recommend a working smoke alarm be installed in each sleeping area, in a common hallway serving sleeping areas, and one on each level of the home. Smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years, or if they become damaged or excessively dirty.

Carbon monoxide alarms – Carbon monoxide alarms are recommended for each home that has fuel-burning appliances. Follow manufacturers recommendations for placement of carbon monoxide alarms in the home

Fire Extinguishers – We recommend each home be equipped with fire extinguishers. Placement of fire extinguishers in the kitchen area, garage, and basement or utility room are recommended as these are the most common sources of fires in the home. ABC type extinguishers are recommended as they will extinguish most fires that start in the home. Extinguishers should be mounted on a bracket in an easily accessible and visible area, so it is available in a fire emergency. Residents should be trained on the proper use of fire extinguishers

Plan review – The fire prevention bureau is responsible for reviewing site plans, architectural drawings for new construction and remodeling projects, fire alarm system drawings, and sprinkler system drawings. If you have drawings to submit for fire department approval, you may email a copy of the plans to fireprevention@springfieldfire.com

Fireworks permits – Any exhibit of fireworks within the service area of the Springfield Township Fire Department shall be permitted and approved prior to the show. Fireworks exhibits within our service area are strictly regulated and shall comply with all requirements of the Ohio Fire Code. Any Ohio licensed exhibitor may apply for a permit to exhibit fireworks by contacting fireprevention@springfieldfire.com

Fire Safety Inspections – The Fire Prevention Bureau is responsible for conducting fire safety inspections of property within our service area. Fire Safety Inspections include, but are not limited to, businesses, stores, warehouses, restaurants, schools, daycares, medical facilities, hotel/motels, assembly areas, storage facilities, and private residences that serve as foster or adoptive homes. Certified Fire Safety inspectors are granted the authority to conduct fire safety inspections and issue citations for fire code violations by the Ohio Administrative Code 1301:7-7-01. The Fire Prevention Bureau adheres to the most current edition of the Ohio Fire Code (currently 2017).
